Cafe Design
900sqft
IIT, Kanpur
Proposal Stage
The Café at IIT Kanpur’s Visitor’s Hostel is envisioned as a serene, modern retreat within the academic environment—a space that encourages pause, interaction, and comfort. Spread across 900 sq.ft., the design emphasizes openness, natural light, and functional elegance. A soft neutral palette, combined with warm wooden textures and subtle greenery, creates a bright and calming ambiance suited for both students and visiting professionals.
The proposal integrates flexible seating arrangements to support multiple modes of use—quiet individual work, casual conversation, and small gatherings. Clean lines, soft curves, and thoughtfully curated lighting enhance visual harmony while maintaining simplicity. Materiality plays a key role, reinforcing comfort without compromising durability or ease of maintenance.
The café aims to serve as a welcoming social node within the hostel—an environment where minimalism meets warmth, and where everyday moments become meaningful through design.
